Support vs. Pride

When you are a parent, you sometimes have to pride to the side in order to support your child(ren).  Sometimes you just have to get downright embarrassing to show them how much you care for, love, and support them.  You have to decide that the long term benefits of your child knowing that you support them is so much more than how you may look.

The Power of Song

Ever since our children were little, we’ve believed in the power of song.  No, we are not singers in this house and no one would dare pay any of us to sing a real song.  However, we can make up a song about any situation and make it fun.  Some of our more memorable (and successful) songs have been The Clean Up Song and The Pee-Pee in the Potty Song.  They aren’t very elaborate, but they are easy to remember.  As you can guess, we sang the songs each time the act was performed.  And when I say “we”, I mean “we”.  Everyone gets involved in the songs.  When our younger son was learning how to be potty trained, his big brother joined in The Pee-Pee in the Potty Song.  What seems so cheesy to most, has been so effective in our house.  The songs are silly, but they make the kids feel really good to know that we will celebrate every feat- no matter how small.

Cheese Anyone?

Although are boys are getting bigger (8th and 4th grades), they still enjoy the cheese that has become their lives.  When they come home from school, we clap and cheer.  And when our 8th grader took the SAT, we cheered, partied, and chanted all morning.  If my children know nothing else, they know that their family loves and supports them.  We don’t care who’s around.  If we want to cheer for the kids or break into a song, we’ll do it.  It’s interesting to see people’s reactions when they first hear our songs because they think we are crazy.  But eventually, they’ll join in.  Some have even incorporated the singing into their homes.

My children come before and above all else so I would do anything for them.  Even if I have to put my pride to the side to support them to the fullest.  Have I made family shirts to wear when they are competing?  Yes.  Have I made buttons to wear at the spelling bee?  Y-E-S.  Have I sung The Pee-Pee in the Potty song in front of my friends and turned the song into a parade?  I sure have.  Why?  Because I have no personal pride when it comes to my children.  My pride is in my children and I’ll do anything to make them smile and know beyond any doubt that their mom is absolutely proud of them in everything they do.
